CESDO (Community Empowerment & Social Development Organization), an NGO based in Somalia, undertook a safety audit assessment in Baidoa and Berdale IDP sites to observe and evaluate the site level protection and GBV risk associated with the camp layouts, camp infrastructure, as well as the security and safety of displaced women and girls. The assessment was aimed at identifying the risks and vulnerabilities faced by the community and developing strategies to address them. The assessment was conducted in collaboration with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
The success story of this safety audit assessment is significant. Firstly, the assessment provided valuable information on the safety and security situation in the IDP sites, which was previously lacking. This information was used to develop a comprehensive safety and security plan for the area, which included measures to mitigate risks and vulnerabilities.
Secondly, the assessment brought together various stakeholders, including local authorities, community leaders, and displaced women and girls, to work towards a common goal. This collaboration was vital in developing effective strategies to address the safety and security challenges faced by the displaced population.
Thirdly, the assessment was conducted in a participatory manner, involving the community in the process. This approach ensured that the assessment was based on the needs and concerns of the community, and that the strategies developed were tailored to their specific needs.
Finally, the assessment was successful in achieving its objectives. The safety and security plan developed as a result of the assessment was implemented, and the measures put in place have improved the safety and security situation in the IDP sites.
Overall, the success of the safety audit assessment in Baidoa and Berdale IDP sites undertaken by CESDO’s CCCM team demonstrates the importance of involving the community and working in collaboration with local stakeholders in addressing safety and security challenges faced by displaced populations, especially women and girls who are often the most vulnerable. It also highlights the importance of conducting assessments to identify risks and vulnerabilities and developing targeted strategies to address them, which is critical in ensuring the safety and security of the displaced population.
